‘Pick Me Up’ for a ski romance? How was that decision made?

‘Pick Me Up’ for a ski romance? How was that decision made?

As with any part of writing a novel, choosing the title was a long process. The fact that it involved picking just three words to represent 9 months of intense writing and editing of my first full-length novel unsurprisingly meant it was not easy!

Honestly though, it was also led by the market. My first and favourite idea was ‘Falling for you’ which would unsubtle refer to the way Bonnie physically trips and falls head over heels for her hero but there are so many of these already available that the meaning of the title (and the possibility of finding a title that already exists in multiple places if trying to purchase that novel) would just be lost in the ether.
Lifts (yes, you heard correctly and by this I mean ski lifts and elevators) are an important part of this novel because they transport characters from spaces they are comfortable in to those they are not, from the ski front to the living spaces and exposed tops of mountains and finally, important feelings appear when characters are pushed into a small mirrored space together. Lift doors also reveal things.
The second idea was ‘Lift Me Up’… From here you might think it was a straight line to ‘Pick Me Up’? Wrong!

You have to promise not to laugh before you move on. All of the below came before I decided on ‘Pick Me Up’:

Snow Place to Fall in Love

It’s All Downhill From Here

Just The Lift You Needed

Love At Altitude

Feel free to pick these off if you need inspiration! I am still very attached to Just The Lift You Needed so if you see it on a future novel, do not be surprised.

‘Pick Me Up’ was finally chosen and cemented for several reasons. The hero picks the heroine up from the floor (not just once either), the act of gaining a romantic partner can be referred to as picking them up and finally, a ‘pick me up’ is by definition “a thing that makes one feel more energetic or cheerful” and that’s what I hope this book will do for so many of you!

As much as I love the title, I was sad we had to leave all the entertaining snow and ski resort themed titles and as a ski romance book should always have something snowy about it, I hope the gorgeous mountains on the cover do the beautiful slopes of the French Alps (and La Plagne in particular) some justice.
